Fremantle
Fremantle is Perth’s port city. The port was a large handling facility for asbestos cargo for most of the 20th century. Locally-produced asbestos was exported from Fremantle port, and imports arrived for use in Perth’s cement factories and for onward shipping to other Australian ports.Thousands of waterside workers at Fremantle port unwittingly put their lives at risk when they handled asbestos cargoes; as a consequence, many of these men have died of asbestos diseases.
